TN Visa for Canadians and Mexicans: How It Works in 2026

The TN visa was created under NAFTA (now USMCA) and is available exclusively to Canadian and Mexican citizens working in one of 63 designated professional occupations. It has no annual cap, no lottery, and — for Canadians — no consulate appointment required. A Canadian professional can walk up to a US port of entry with the right documentation and be admitted in TN status the same day.

Despite these advantages, many Canadian and Mexican professionals default to H-1B because that is what their employer knows. Understanding the TN is worth the time: it can get you working in the US faster, cheaper, and with far less bureaucratic friction than any other work visa.

TN categories: the 63 qualifying professions

The TN covers a wide range of professional occupations including accountants, engineers, scientists, computer systems analysts, lawyers, physicians (for teaching/research only, not patient care), pharmacists, nurses, and many others. The full list is in Appendix 2 of the USMCA. The job offered must fall squarely within one of the listed categories — there is no catch-all provision. If your role is "software engineer," USCIS classifies it under "engineer" or "computer systems analyst" depending on the specific duties and your degree. Have your employer confirm the TN category before applying.

Canadian process: port of entry admission

Canadian citizens do not need a visa stamp or a consulate appointment. You apply directly at a US port of entry (airport, land border, or pre-clearance facility in Canada). Bring: a Canadian passport, a letter from your US employer describing the position and TN category, proof of your qualifying degree or credentials, and the TN filing fee ($56). The CBP officer reviews the documents and, if satisfied, admits you in TN status. Same-day processing is the norm. TN is granted for up to 3 years and is renewable indefinitely at the port of entry or through USCIS (I-129 petition).

Mexican process: consular visa required

Mexican citizens must obtain a TN visa stamp at a US consulate before entering. This involves scheduling a DS-160 visa application and an interview. The required documents are similar to the Canadian process, but the consular step adds weeks or months depending on appointment availability. Once the TN visa is in your passport, you can use it for multiple entries during its validity period. The initial TN status is granted for up to 3 years; the visa stamp validity may differ from the status period.

TN limitations and the green card question

The TN is a nonimmigrant visa, and USCIS technically expects TN holders to have nonimmigrant intent — meaning you intend to return to your home country. This creates a tension with pursuing a green card simultaneously. In practice, many TN holders have employer-sponsored green card petitions pending without issue, but the dual intent question can cause problems at the border if CBP becomes concerned your primary intent is to immigrate. H-1B explicitly allows dual intent; TN does not. For Canadians pursuing a green card, transitioning to H-1B (if a cap-exempt slot is available or through the lottery) is often recommended before the I-485 is filed.

Frequently asked questions

How many times can I renew a TN visa?

There is no limit on TN renewals. The visa can be renewed indefinitely in 3-year increments as long as you continue to qualify — meaning you have a valid job offer in a TN-qualifying profession and maintain your credentials. Many professionals have maintained TN status for 10+ years.

Can my family come with me on TN?

Yes. Your spouse and unmarried children under 21 can accompany you on TD (Trade Dependent) status. TD status does not itself grant work authorization — your spouse would need a separate work visa (such as an EAD if eligible or an independent work visa) to work in the US.

Can I change from TN to H-1B?

Yes, but only if your employer files a cap-subject H-1B petition (selected in the lottery) or a cap-exempt petition (if you or the employer qualify). Changing from TN to H-1B is not automatic — it requires a separate petition and lottery selection or cap-exempt eligibility.
